ENERGY STAR does not set restrictions on the size of homes that can earn the label. One of the hallmarks of the ENERGY STAR program is that it does not ask consumers to sacrifice the features or performance they want. Rather, the goal of the program is to help consumers identify energy-efficient products and homes when they are in the market for a particular item; be it a dishwasher, refrigerator, or new home. It is important to recognize that a large home that earns the ENERGY STAR uses significantly less energy than a large home that is built just to meet code requirements.
